What is Metastatic Cancer?

Metastatic cancer also is also known as advanced cancer. In the metastasis process, the cancer cells spread to nearby tissues by the way of the lymph system and circulatory system.  These cancers cells turn into a secondary tumor. When this stage occurs, the doctors declare cancer to be stage 4cancer and a metastatic cancer.

How do metastases develop?

Metastases occur when the cancer cells become strong and difficult to break away from the initial spot and spread to other body parts through the bloodstream. After this process, the cancer cells settle in different parts and form tumors. There are so many factors which may affect the metastasize such as-

  • Type of the cancer
  • The grade of the primary cancer
  • How strong or aggressive it is

Metastatic cancer commonly develops in the bones, brain, liver, lymph nodes, and lungs. It can also develop in abdominal cavity. This also affects skin, muscles or other organs.

How Cancer Spreads

When cancer cells grow and separate, they start moving from one part to another part of the body. There are 3 different ways growth can spread.

Direct extension, or invasion– In this way, the tumors when is in initial position grows into tissues and structures of the body surrounding body.

Lymphatic System Spread- In this, Cancel cells break down from a primary tumor and transmit to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system. This system is a group of organs that store cells that fight with the infection and diseases.

Bloodstream, hematogenous, and spread– In this, the cancer cells enter the bloodstream and spread to new parts of the body.

Sometimes it is difficult to observe the symptoms of a particular disease.  Metastatic cancer may or may not be symptomatic. Most of the time symptoms are not dependent on the type of cancer, size, and location of metastases. Some signs may include-

  • Vision problems
  • Dizziness
  • Body pain
  • Inflammation
  • Difficulty in movement
  • Inflammation in the abdominal area
  • Confusion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Blood in urine
  • A persistent cough
  • Change in bowel habits
  • Unhealed pain in the body

Treatment for Metastatic Cancer

Treatment of cancer depends on the type of cancer, the size, where it started, and the location of the metastasis. The treatment includes a type of therapy that is chemotherapy or hormone therapy. If this therapy does not work then it can also be replaced by another type.

It is not sure that the treatment will affect only the targeted area it may affect the entire body. The treatment may be systematic or it can be local. The factors that affect the treatment are- primary cancer spot, the extent of spread of cancer, and age of the patient.

Other treatments may include radiation therapy, biological therapy, and surgery or also include the combination of these three. Treatment for metastatic cancer aims to relieve symptoms, side effects, to slow the growth, and spread of cancer.

As this cancer is advanced cancer or 4 stage cancer, in such a critical case, it is important to take an effective treatment.
